Not too long ago, St. John was hardly a tourist destination. It was too remote for most travelers. There were multiple flight connections and other obstacles that made St. John tough to reach. Now, there are direct flights from Boston, Chicago, Detroit, New York, Philadelphia, Newark, Baltimore, Charlotte, Atlanta, Ft. Lauderdale and Miami to St. Thomas. Plus, modern living has taken out some of the less pleasurable variables of island life (lack of imports) and moved St. John up the list of desirable vacation destinations. Of course, we wanted you to be able to locate us when you got here, so we applied to be officially located on Google Maps. Don’t worry, this does not mean that you will be seen walking around town on Google Street View. St. John is still very much an “off-the-grid” experience. (We sort of like it that way and we think you will too!) You will notice when you drive around the island, there are very few street signs, and even fewer cell phone towers. Most places are known by their name, not by an address. It is part of the charm of the island, and one way to be sure you get lost in the moment!
The number of beautiful islands in and around St. John make boating especially fun. There is a certain sense of freedom that comes from speeding around their craggy cliffs and stopping for a swim along their white sandy shores. It is invigorating and well-deserved! Pronounced ‘keys’, these small islands, or cays, are surrounded by delicate fringing reefs that require local-knowledge to approach safely. Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered!
